WoPU Inaugurates Kano Chapter, Mobilises Workers for Tinubu, Abba Kabir

The Working People United (WoPU) has inaugurated its Kano State chapter, with the newly appointed leadership pledging to mobilise workers across the state in support of what it described as good governance and purposeful leadership.

The inauguration took place on August 9, 2026, in Kano metropolis, bringing together national and state leaders as well as members of the organisation.

The programme commenced at 5:00 p.m. with an opening prayer led by Idris Gama, followed by a solidarity song led by the WoPU National General Secretary, Comrade Oladapo Sunday Moses. Participants subsequently introduced themselves before the national leadership delivered its address.

Speaking on behalf of the National President, the National General Secretary, Oladapo Sunday Moses, described Kano as a strategic state with a significant role in Nigeria’s development.

“Kano is a special state and is held in high esteem. Kano is at the forefront in all life activities,” he said.

The organisation said WoPU was established as a national movement to advocate good governance and mobilise working people in support of policies and programmes it considers beneficial to workers and society.

The national leadership expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the administration of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

It cited initiatives including the NELFUND student loan scheme, the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project, implementation of the new minimum wage, payment of wage awards and efforts to address prolonged strikes in the education and health sectors.

The group also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects and the adjustment of the minimum wage negotiation period to three years as measures it said demonstrated the government’s commitment to workers.

On the removal of fuel subsidy, WoPU acknowledged the economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians, but argued that the policy was necessary to prevent what it described as a possible collapse of the national economy.

Kano WoPU Leadership Inaugurated

As part of the event, the Kano State chapter was formally inaugurated, with Comrade Hashim A. Saleh emerging as the State Chapter Coordinator.

• Hon. Muhammad Tijjani — Social Secretary I

• Comrade Bello Saja — Organising Secretary

• Hajiya Halima Abdullahi — Women Coordinator

• Comrade Abdullahi Idris — Welfare Coordinator I

• Comrade Zakari Muhammad Sarina — Mobilisation Officer I

• Hajiya Lami Isah — Youth Coordinator

The organisation said the remaining 24 positions would be allocated by the state chapter to representatives of other unions and associations.

Coordinator Pledges Accountability

In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated State Chapter Coordinator, Comrade Hashim A. Saleh, pledged to provide transparent and accountable leadership.

He also promised to mobilise workers across Kano State towards the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Saleh said his decision to join WoPU was influenced by what he described as the good governance and purposeful leadership of President Tinubu.

“We will provide transparent and accountable leadership and mobilise workers towards the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he said.

The National General Secretary subsequently presented certificates of appointment to the newly inaugurated Kano State chapter leaders.

Vote of Thanks

The vote of thanks was delivered by the State Chapter Secretary, Comrade Haladu Musa, who appreciated the national leadership, state coordinator and other guests for attending the inauguration.

He also prayed for the safe return of participants to their respective destinations.

The meeting ended at 6:46 p.m. with a closing prayer led by Hajiya Lami Isah.

The inauguration formally marked the commencement of WoPU’s activities in Kano State, with the new leadership expected to coordinate the organisation’s programmes and mobilise workers and affiliated groups across the state.
